In the last few years, substantial transformations in higher education have opened up extraordinary new opportunities to innovate classroom instruction and expand educational opportunities.
In order to ensure that Rice continues to deliver quality education in this period of dynamic innovation and experimentation, the Teaching Innovation Fund (TIF) welcomes proposals from departments, groups of faculty, or individual faculty seeking to develop pedagogy, courseware, or curriculum that utilizes new technologies, delivery methods, or tools. The TIF is an internal funding mechanism that awards competitive grants of between $5,000-$10,000.
Applicants are encouraged to seek funding from other available sources. Funds awarded will be for academic year 2016-2017. Funds may carry over for a second academic year in extenuating circumstances, but will require prior approval.
Full-time and research faculty members at Rice are eligible to apply. Proposals may be submitted individually or by a group of faculty. Please inform your department chair that you have applied.
The review will be done by a committee of referees assembled by the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and Digital Education, with input from the Dean of Undergraduates and Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
This committee will be comprised of faculty from across the university, and they may not be TIF applicants.
Proposals will be evaluated according to the following criteria, recognizing that not all proposals will meet all criteria:
Proposals are due by March 20, 2017 and must include the following documents in PDF format:
